Pain disorders are common. You may feel one of these kinds of pain: sharp or dull, off-and-on or steady, localized (such as back pain) or all over (such as muscle aches from the flu). Sometimes, the pain can last for weeks, even months or years. Many people usually take over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen) to relieve their pain. However, these medications could only relieve your pain temporarily. Among the alternative ways for pain control, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are especially effective.
Acupuncture has been studied for a wide range of pain conditions, such as low-back pain, headache and Migraine, neck and shoulder pain, Sciatica, dental pain, Arthritis & Arthritic Pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, menstrual cramps, myofascial pain, pelvic pain during pregnancy, dysmenorrhea, and osteoarthritis. Promising results demonstrated that acupuncture can achieve long-lasting pain relief or even total recovery from pain. It makes acupuncture as a cost effective approach for pain management.
Why is acupuncture effective in pain relief?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, human bodies are empowered by Qi. Qi runs in regular patterns through energy channels, called meridians, which are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. Blood flow and nervous pulses also follow meridians to run through the body to various parts, structures and organs. Any obstruction and blockages or deficiencies of Qi, blood and nervous pulses would eventually lead to disease. Acupuncture needles insert some specific regulative points on the meridians to regulate the Qi, and therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.
In modern science theory, needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. The substances released as a result of acupuncture not only relax the whole body, they regulate serotonin in the brain which plays a role in human and animal disposition. This is why depression is often treated with acupuncture. Some of the physiological effects observed throughout the body include increased circulation, decreased inflammation, relief from pain, relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count which stimulates the immune system.
In July 2010, Rochester University Medical Center published a breakthrough research paper on Nature Neuroscience. Their scientists found acupuncture can make adenosine release that relief the pain (Nature Neuroscience. 2010 Jul; 13(7):883-8). More and more scientific research found acupuncture can stimulate the never system to release chemical materials like endorphins and adenosine et al, which can cause positive sensations affecting nerves systems to produce beneficial reflex responses. Meantime, acupuncture can regulate the body's nature life field including electoral and magnetic fields which maintain the nature health.
The more acupuncture treatment the patient have the longer the normal movement pattern of the Qi can remain, until finally the Qi would not follow the abnormal movement pattern any more. Only at this point the problem can be deemed as solved and treated completely.

I'm 55 years old and have been suffering from migraine for more than 20 years. I have seen a lot of neurologists and took numerous medications, but those treatments only gave me temporary relief for a very short period of time. I was very desperate since the pain kept spreading in my head and I could not concentrate on anything. Thank god I finally found the cure in Dr. Wang's clinic. After only 10 visits to Dr. Wang for acupuncture, my pain was totally gone. It has been 1 month since my last visit. This is my first month in the last 20 years without a headache and any medications. I'm keeping visiting Dr. Wang every other month for follow up check. Thank you, Dr. Wang! You are the one who makes me live a better life. - Katherine
